The project

ItzulBaita is a project initiated by EIZIE, the Association of Translators, Correctors and Interpreters of the Basque Language (Euskal Itzulzaile, Zuzentzaile eta Interpreteen Elkartea); it has only just begun, and is moving forward slowly but steadily.

ItzulBaita was first introduced to the public on October 2, 2007. Its purpose is to serve as a home base, a reference center and an antenna for Basque translation.

We would like it to serve as a home base for translation, not merely for translators; a physical location as well as a virtual one. It will also function as a reference center for Basque translation, providing information on what has been done in translation and what is currently being done, and promoting and overseeing research, reflection and other initiatives in the field. ItzulBaita will concern itself with translation from and into the Basque language, serving as an antenna between the Basque Country and the rest of the world.

ItzulBaita also strives to achieve the following:

  • to complement rather than replace existing organizations, and to serve as a meeting place for work and reflection;
  • to be flexible and able to meet changing needs and situations;
  • to be innovative in both its approach and its performance; and
  • to have a wide application, not only in the different sectors of society (from industry to literature), but also with respect to all those who contribute to the field (including the university system and the telecommunications industry, for example).
